Refurbished

Second-hand is a sourcing decision, not a compromise.

A previous-generation node with a proper test history is often the correct engineering answer: for capacity fill, for lab and test estates, for DR sites, and for extending a platform your operations team already knows. What matters is knowing exactly what you are buying.

When refurbished is the wrong answer

We will say so, and we would rather say it before the purchase order than after.

  • Workloads where performance per watt is the whole business case — the power bill will overtake the saving.
  • Estates under a vendor support contract that will not cover third-party-supplied hardware.
  • Platforms where the vendor has withdrawn firmware and security updates entirely.
  • Deployments needing more than a couple of dozen identical units of an older platform — matched supply gets hard, fast.

Grading

  • A

    No visible marks. Bezels, rails and blanks complete.

    Full test pass. Every component at the documented baseline.

    Production and customer-facing estates

  • B

    Light rack rash or scuffing. Cosmetically sound at 1 m.

    Full test pass. Firmware baselined.

    Production back-end, DR, staging

  • C

    Visible wear, marks or missing bezel. Structurally sound.

    Full test pass. Sold as function-only.

    Lab, test, training, spares donors

Anything that fails the functional test is not downgraded to sell — it is stripped for spares. Grade C means it looks used, never that it works less well.

Test protocol

What every unit goes through.

  1. Intake and identification

    Serial recorded, configuration audited against the vendor’s original build, warranty and service history checked, stolen-asset registers screened.

  2. Data sanitisation

    All data-bearing media purged to NIST SP 800-88 or destroyed before the unit goes any further. Certificates issued per serial. No exceptions and no shortcuts.

  3. Strip and clean

    Chassis opened, dust and filters removed, thermal interface material replaced, fans and PSUs inspected, backplane connectors checked.

  4. Component test

    CPU, memory, storage, adapters and management controller tested individually. Anything marginal is replaced from the spares pool, not passed on.

  5. Firmware baseline

    BIOS, BMC, controller, backplane and drive firmware brought to a single, documented level — usually the last known-good release rather than the newest.

  6. Load testing

    Exercised under load to the same protocol as new systems. Logs retained and released with the unit on request.

Refurbished stock turns over quickly and this list moves week to week. Ask for a current position before you build a budget around it.

Terms

Twelve months, return to base, no argument about grades.

Coverage
Twelve months from the invoice date on the whole system, including drives. Extendable to 24 or 36 months at order.
Response
RMA decision within 24 hours. Advance replacement where we hold the platform in the spares pool, which covers most of what we sell.
Exclusions
Physical damage, liquid ingress, firmware modified outside the documented baseline, and consumables. That is the whole list.
After the term
Spares remain available for platforms we have sold, including ones the vendor has taken past end-of-service-life. We hold the pool because our own customers need it.
